Chapter Seven

The library had numerous shelves that held books stacked on top of rows that were jam packed. Every space was filled. Even though they were underground, the basement held the right amount of humidity. He looked at the wall, and a massive control panel made sure the room was always the perfect temperature with the right amount of moisture. The lights mimicked a bright sunny day. He looked up. The ceiling was filled with recessed lighting. He closed his eyes and breathed in the delicious smell of old worn leather. The low buzz of air being blown into the room hummed a soft melody. All earlier tension evaporated.

The scuffling of feet pulled him back to reality. He scratched the side of his head as he turned to look at Jay. “It should have been harder to get into the room,” he said, more to himself as he tried to make sense of the situation.

His tiny bookstore had thick double-pane glass hardened with magic, a silent alarm, and invisible cameras. Even if he wasn’t there, he could look inside and see what was going on. Mason’s library was just as loved. He rode down an elevator, climbed down three flights of stairs and walked through the door. It’s not like he was expecting spikes in the floor or an acid moat. Maybe state-of-the-art locks or a couple of guards, but there was nothing.

Jay punched in a four number code to ride the private elevator. That’s it. Every other door opened for them.

“It’s luck, and I’m lucky.” Jay shrugged like it was no big deal.

“It’s more than luck,” he said, leaving off all comments of incompetency and stupidity. Jay looked innocent, but something didn’t click. Grant couldn’t read people, but he knew when someone was hiding something. He’d known for years that his mother was afraid of him. She tried to hide it, but he knew. It was a defense he’d built up. He could tell if a person was keeping a secret.

Jay was a little too nice. He smiled a little too big. He wanted to help, and that kind of helpfulness often led to trouble. Jay was like the kid that told him the teacher said to take one, only to discover that he wasn’t supposed to take any.

Jay’s eyes widened with mock innocence, pretending not to notice the implied distrust. The smaller man refused to acknowledge anything. No, it was more than that. He wasn’t just ignoring the signs, but pretending that they didn’t exist. There was no animosity, and that confused Grant. Until he figured out Jay’s angle, everyone had an angle, he needed to watch him.

The books were organized using the same style as his bookstore. Each row held a different subject, and then the subjects were divided by author and organized by date. He walked to the section containing information about wizards. He recognized a lot of the books. A few were banned in the wizard territory. Grant’s father had brought home copies of some of the banned books.
